WHOLE BEAN COFFEE

Tastes Like: Medjool dates, Turtles chocolate, Citrus zest

For a long time, I’ve wanted to bring an Indian coffee to Mood. My roots go back to India, though I was born in Canada and have only visited once, about twelve years ago. What surprised me most in Delhi was that “good coffee” usually meant instant. What I didn’t realize then was that something else entirely was brewing in the south, and it was great arabica coffee.

That’s what makes this one so personal. Connecting with Komal Sable of South India Coffee Company was one of the coolest moments of my sourcing journey, and through her we were able to bring in not one, but two lots from Hamsini Appadurai and her family. I fell in love with the lots immediately.

Think sticky dates, chocolate-covered caramel and pecans, and a bright, sweet lift of citrus zest. It’s a wonderfully versatile coffee that shines on both filter and espresso. My favourite way to drink it is as espresso cut with a little milk.

Hamsini and her family run their estates as a true family affair, with each person bringing their own expertise. Together they share a deep commitment to growing exceptional coffee. These coffees are grown at remarkably low elevations for specialty coffee, but you’d never guess it from the cup: the quality is impeccable. If you’ve never tried an Indian coffee before, this is one you won’t want to miss.

About the Producer

This coffee comes from the Appadurai family of Sangameshwar Coffee Estates. Their influence reaches well beyond their own farm and helps shape specialty coffee across India.

Biccode Estate is a 150-hectare coffee and pepper estate near Belur, in Hassan. Its story goes back to Clement Lake, an Englishman who built the estate’s bungalow in 1906 and lived there with his wife and son until 1935. The farm sits at the start of Karnataka’s coffee belt and gets about 60 inches of rain a year. Today the Appadurai family grows coffee here under a diverse canopy of shade trees, alongside areca palms and pepper vines, with plenty of avocados too. Every cherry is hand-picked over several passes, so only the ripe fruit makes it in. In 2023, the family restored the original bungalow and opened it as a heritage homestay, Biccode Woodside Heritage, so visitors can stay on the estate and experience it first hand.

Hamsini Appadurai leads marketing and sales and is President of the Specialty Coffee Association of India. She has 15 years in coffee, a Master’s in Business and Finance, and Q Processing Professional credentials in both Arabica and Robusta. Her work centres on sustainable practices that reduce environmental impact while raising quality.

Shriya Appadurai leads business development. After a career in investment banking, she now builds the estate’s partnerships with buyers in India and around the world.

Mr. Appadurai, Managing Director, has spent 28 years as a coffee planter. He is a founding member of the Specialty Coffee Association of India and served as its Secretary from 2019 to 2024. He is a past Chairman of the Karnataka Planters Association and now chairs the India Coffee Trade Association.

Together they look after everything in the field: nursing seedlings, managing irrigation, analyzing soil, and planning shade. Their focus is on building a regenerative ecosystem.

Sourcing

This coffee came to us through South India Coffee Company (SICC), co-founded by Komal Sable. Komal holds the CQI’s Q Processing 2 certification and leads SICC’s buyer relationships, export operations, and farm partnerships. Together with her husband Akshay, she is working to bring South Indian coffee to a wider audience around the world.

SICC sees green coffee as one part of a much bigger system. Alongside sourcing, they partner closely with farms and producer communities. They research alternative coffee species and climate resilience, and they maintain a living collection of coffee plants on their own farms. They also coordinate logistics at both origin and destination, so every coffee stays traceable from farm to roastery.

I’m honoured to work with SICC this year, and hopefully for many years to come.
