Decaf Colombia Washed EA - Proyecto Berruecos
Decaf Colombia Washed EA - Proyecto Berruecos
WHOLE BEAN COFFEE
Tastes like: Salted Caramel, Graham Cracker, Apricot
In my experience, decaf coffee has never had a great reputation. I'm here to try and change that. Decaf can be just as lovely as full-caf coffee if it's treated properly.
This lot is sourced from the Proyecto Berruecos project in Arboleda, Nariño, where Francy Castillo supports smallholder farmers (both men and women) with technical training and access to specialty markets. These coffees are hand-harvested, double-fermented, and patio dried for up to 18 days. Decaffeination is carried out using the EA (ethyl acetate) process, a natural method derived from sugarcane that preserves flavour integrity while removing caffeine. The result is a smooth, layered cup with salted caramel, graham cracker, and apricot.

About the Producer: Francy Castillo & Women of Arboleda
Francy Castillo oversees the Berruecos Project, which consolidates parchment from small producers at her collection point, giving remote producers access to the specialty coffee market and enabling them to earn premium prices.
The project focuses on supporting coffee producers in Arboleda Berruecos and San Lorenzo, Nariño, by visiting their farms to assess community needs, providing technical assistance on specialty coffee practices, and offering tools and resources for daily fieldwork.
The aim is to promote the sustainable development of the coffee industry, enhancing quality, environmental preservation, inclusion, and competitiveness to benefit producers, youth, and women in the community.
Sourcing in Colombia
We came across this lot from Apex Coffee in Montreal, Canada.
Nariño, located in the Andes mountain range, is a mountainous department with diverse landscapes, ranging from the high Andean plateaus to tropical
forests and Pacific Ocean beaches. Its volcanic soils, rich in minerals from the eruptions of the Galeras volcano, are essential to the exceptional quality of the coffee grown in the region. Today, coffee from Nariño is not only a local economic pillar but also a key player in the global reputation of Colombian coffee.
The coffee from Arboleda is renowned for its unique flavour profiles, often described as having bright acidity, floral notes, and a balanced body. The area’s coffee is typically grown at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,200 meters above sea level, which contributes to the slow maturation of the coffee cherries, enhancing their flavour complexity.
The Arboleda community, like many in Nariño, focuses on sustainable coffee cultivation to protect the environment and ensure long-term production.
To make this coffee decaf without stripping away its character, the beans go through a natural ethyl acetate (EA) decaffeination process. Using a by-product of sugarcane, EA gently extracts caffeine while preserving the coffee’s inherent flavours, leaving behind a clean cup with remarkable depth.

I think I've tried every decaf available to Canada. And I've ordered a bunch internationally, as well! They're all either too bitter, or too sour and usually both. Mood decaf is the first time I've truly fully enjoyed drinking decaf.yay!! Cant wait for my next order!
I’ve tried a lot of decaf coffees and I still keep coming back to this one. That alone says a lot. It’s consistently smooth, well-balanced, and actually enjoyable to drink—something that isn’t always easy to find with decaf.
I’m still brewing it using a pour-over method, and it continues to deliver a clean, rich cup with great flavour and no bitterness. It doesn’t feel like a compromise at all, which is exactly what I look for in a decaf.
If you’ve been disappointed by other decafs in the past, this one is absolutely worth trying. It’s become my go-to, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
I tried the decaf as I find many decaf coffees do it have a very good flavour or are quite bitter. The Mood decaf tastes amazing and doesn't leave a bad aftertaste. I also need very little sugar or cream to make it to my taste. Usually I need quite a lot of both to make it palatable.
I have been enjoying this coffee very much. I have an espresso machine and grind the beans to make a latte every morning. I will buy this coffee again. I have enjoyed it very much.
I was really happy to get my bag of decaf as the nuanced flavours of all of your blends are so appealing that it was hard to stop at two cups a day. The decaf means that I have three special times each day to indulge in smooth, round, earthy flavours.
