WHOLE BEAN COFFEE

Tastes Like: Blackberry Jam, Mango Milkshake, Toasted Almond, Toffee

This natural Bourbon from Burundi is truly special. Ntwari means hero in Kirundi and this coffee is named after the owner of the wet-mill, a widow who is finding her voice in the male-dominated coffee industry after her husband's passing.

When I first came across this coffee, I knew I had to have it. I have the privilege of coming across a lot of stellar lots of coffees and this one was just so, so good. Jammy and fruity but also approachable with nutty and toffee undertones. No acidic aftertaste which can sometimes be present with natural coffees.

There was just one caveat: this wet-mill owner didn't want to disclose her name or who she was. She didn't want the spotlight, she just wanted her coffees to speak for themselves. I had to put my trust in JNP (our import partner) on this one in honouring this woman's wishes. And trusting JNP wasn't that hard to do given their incredible story and track record.

Started by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian in 2012, JNP is super-charging the specialty coffee industry in Burundi, her home country. Prior to this she had an impressive 20+ year career in international business and even earned a prestigious MBA from Kellogg.

And I really hope you love this coffee as much as I do.

About the Producer: Ntwari

In Muyinga, Burundi, one woman's journey into coffee began where many might have turned away. After losing her husband, she found her voice and her footing in a male-dominated industry, guided by the values of courage and leadership captured in the Kirundi word ntwari (meaning "hero"). Having learned the craft of specialty coffee through the JNP Coffee community, she now leads a growing operation processed at a women-owned wet mill and turns her hard-won experience into opportunity for the next generation of young women farmers.

Mood and JNP are respecting this wet-mill owner's wishes by keeping her anonymous. She has chosen not to disclose her name to the public and we respect that. Wondering why we trust the sourcing of this coffee and still consider it fully traceable? Jeanine (owner of JNP) has met and worked with the owner directly, vouching for her credentials. JNP also disclosed the coordinates of the wet-mill to us and shared other verifiable info through conversations while sourcing this coffee. We are proud to offer this coffee to our customers and respect this woman's right to privacy.

Sourcing in Burundi

Burundi is a small landlocked country in the heart of East Africa, nestled within the Albertine Rift of the Great Rift Valley. Its mountain chains and high plateau create dramatic elevation. Most coffee here grows between 1,200 and 1,950 meters above sea level, where cooler temperatures, volcanic soil, and generous rainfall of around 1,200mm per year produce something unmistakable: bright, expressive acidity, tropical fruit punch, and a syrupy, candy-like sweetness that lingers.

Coffee accounts for more than 80% of Burundi's exports, grown by over 800,000 smallholder farmers. The most celebrated regions, Kayanza, Ngozi, Muyinga, Karusi, Cankuzo, and Gitega, are concentrated in the northwest, where conditions are ideal and the coffee community runs deep.

Our coffee comes through JNP Coffee, an organization doing work that goes far beyond the cup. JNP works with over 18,000 farmers, with a particular focus on women growers, paying them directly, supporting financial literacy, and creating pathways for them to become central participants in their local economies. Their Dushime® premium payment program (Dushime meaning "let's be thankful" in Kirundi) delivers a second payment to farmers after harvest proceeds arrive from global buyers, flowing directly back into communities: school fees, supplies, fertilizer for next season.
