WHOLE BEAN COFFEE

Why This Coffee is Aloof

Tastes Like: Hot Cocoa, Glosette Raisins (chocolate-covered), Papaya

Aloof is the coffee you turn to when you need a moment of quiet. Bold yet refined, it delivers a rich and comforting experience that lets you fully immerse yourself in your coffee ritual. With deep hot cocoa richness, the sweetness of chocolate-covered raisins, and a touch of papaya’s subtle brightness, it’s the perfect cup to savour on your own, whether you’re easing into the morning or taking a well-deserved pause in your day.

This micro-lot comes from Marleyi Córdoba in Los Robles, San Agustín, Huila, Colombia. Her journey into specialty coffee hasn’t been easy, marked by family tragedy, extreme climate challenges, and the heavy responsibility of running a farm as a woman in a male-dominated industry. But her persistence and determination led her to plant new varieties, refine her processing, and carve out a place in the specialty market. This prized lot is the result of that perseverance.

By choosing Aloof, you’re not just tasting an exceptional Colombian coffee, you’re supporting a producer who embodies resilience and grit.

About the Producer: Marleyi Córdoba

Marleyi’s story is one of persistence against all odds. Her family migrated from Cauca to San Agustín when she was a child, but early attempts at coffee failed due to the farm’s cold, high-altitude climate. At just seven years old, Marleyi’s childhood was shaped by hardship, and by her teenage years, she had left school to find work in nearby cities.

In 2018, a family tragedy brought her back: her brother passed away suddenly, and soon after, her father abandoned the farm. With her mother, Marleyi took over full responsibility for running El Diviso, something still uncommon for women in Colombia. To survive, Marleyi turned to the practice of “jornal al cambio”, which involves working one day on other farms and then returning to her own farm to work the next.

Despite the difficulties, Marleyi fought to grow the farm. She negotiated for another hectare, planted the Tabi variety, and began investing in specialty coffee, inspired and supported by her friend Jhon Jairo Gomez. Since then, she has worked tirelessly to refine her processing, expand her facilities, and plant new Pink Bourbon trees.

Today, Marleyi is not only producing beautiful coffees like this El-Diviso Tabi micro-lot, but also claiming her space in the specialty market, a remarkable achievement in light of everything she’s faced.

Sourcing in Colombia

Marleyi is part of Monkaaba, a smallholder empowerment initiative in San Agustín led by Esnaider Ortega-Gomez. Monkaaba helps producers like Marleyi find better markets, gain transparency, and build long-term sustainability in coffee. Through education, cupping sessions, and shared resources, it gives farmers the tools and confidence to take ownership of their craft and future.

By sourcing through Semilla and Monkaaba, we’re able to connect directly with producers like Marleyi, supporting her vision, honouring her resilience, and helping ensure her coffee reaches buyers who value it.

When you drink Aloof, you’re not just enjoying a quiet, confident cup. You’re participating in a larger shift toward equity, recognition, and sustainability in Colombian coffee.

Fresh and sweet

I drank this black and was pleasantly surprised by its sweet flavour. An extremely easy drinking blend that doesn’t need anything added to it. I’ve been enjoying this as my everyday morning cup.
