WHOLE BEAN COFFEE

Tastes Like: Dulce de Leche, White Cranberry, Assam Tea

This natural Red Bourbon from Rwanda is vibrant, structured, and expressive. Bright red fruit leads the cup, followed by milky caramel sweetness and a soft black tea note that carries through the aftertaste, giving the cup elegance and length.

The high elevation of Bukure allows sugars to develop slowly in the cherry, building clarity and depth. The natural processing enhances fruit character while maintaining a clean, polished profile. The result is layered, composed, and very satisfying.

This lot was produced by Nova Coffee, a women-centred washing station in Rwanda’s Northern Province and is traceable to 30 members of the Dukundumurimo farmers’ group within the Dukorere Kawa cooperative.

Nova is led by Agnes Mukamushinja and Felix Hitayezu, a nurse-pharmacist team who entered coffee in 2015 with a mission to improve farmer livelihoods through strong agronomy, structured processing, and women-centered leadership. They rebuilt an aging washing station in Bukure into a professionalized hub with a full-time agronomist and dedicated quality control manager overseeing processing and drying.

Agnes’s connection to coffee is deeply personal. The coffee trees in her home village were destroyed during the genocide, trees her father had supported for decades as an agronomist. Nova represents long-term rebuilding, intention, and investment in both quality and community.

Choosing this coffee means supporting a women-led operation committed to traceability, precision, and expanded market access for smallholder farmers.

About the Producer: Nova & Dukundumurimo

Nova Coffee is led by nurse-pharmacist team (and married couple) of Agnes Mukamushinja and Felix Hitayezu, who came to coffee after running Pharmacie Nova in Kigali. Their move into the sector began in 2015, grounded in a formal mission to improve community livelihoods through better farming practices and a women-centered model for processing. They purchased an aging washing station in Bukure and rebuilt it as a professionalized hub for local growers.

Agnes’s personal connection to coffee is rooted in her home village, where most trees were destroyed during the genocide. These are trees her father had supported for decades as an agronomist. Once in Bukure, she tapped every available resource: government trainings, NAEB programs, Rwanda’s IWCA (International Women's Coffee Alliance) chapter, and value-add opportunities. One outcome was Le Café de Mamans, a roasted brand produced with 263 women farmers of the Berwa Cooperative and sold domestically.

Today, Nova receives cherry from three cooperatives: Jyambere Muhinzi Wakawa, Dukorere Kawa, and Berwa alongside smallholders adjacent to the station. Their team includes a full-time agronomist, experienced operations leads, and QC manager Celeste, who oversees processing and drying. Continued willingness to experiment, as shown with a variety of naturals and anaerobic coffees, reflect Nova’s push toward higher-quality processing and expanded market access for farmers in the Bukure sector.

Within the Dukorere Kawa cooperative is a micro farmer's group called Dukundumurimo, which translates to "passion for work". This outstanding red bourbon comes from the 30 farmers within Dukundumurimo, showcasing meticulous attention to detail that you can taste in the cup.

Sourcing in Rwanda

Rwanda’s specialty coffee sector has grown significantly over the past two decades through investment in washing stations, training programs, and international partnerships. Today, coffee remains central to rural livelihoods, with most production coming from smallholder farmers.

Rwanda’s coffee sector has completely transformed over the past two decades. In 2000, the government put coffee at the center of its agricultural recovery strategy, investing in washing stations and leveraging international partnerships. A 2002 cupping event in Kigali marked the start of Rwanda’s specialty story: from virtually zero specialty-grade production, to more than half of national output by 2018. Today, washing stations operate in 26 of 30 districts, and coffee is a crop that touches nearly every community.

Almost all Rwandan coffee comes from smallholders, many tied to one of 200+ cooperatives. Ninety-nine percent is exported, with attention focused largely on washed processing, though an increasing range of high-quality natural and honey process offerings continue making headway among quality-focused producers and buyers.

This natural lot was processed at Nova’s washing station in Bukure. Whole cherries were dried carefully on raised beds at high altitude, allowing sugars to concentrate and fruit character to develop steadily. Controlled drying supports consistency, sweetness, and a refined cup structure.

We sourced this coffee through Crop to Cup, who have partnered with Nova since 2017 and prioritize long-term relationships and transparent pricing.

In the cup, this coffee delivers bright cranberry, creamy dulce de leche sweetness, and a steady black tea finish. Vibrant, grounded, and intentionally crafted from farm to roast.
