Whimsical: Guatemala Organic Washed from Women's CODECH
Why This Coffee is Whimsy
Tastes Like: Praline, Tahitian Vanilla, Red Grapefruit
Whimsical is that coffee that catches you a little off guard in the best way. It’s sweet, bright, and layered with flavour, and there’s something playful about it that keeps you coming back. The kind of cup that makes you pause, raise an eyebrow, and go, “Wait, what is that?” It’s not trying too hard. It’s just naturally surprising, and we love that.
It comes from CODECH, a women-led co-op in a small town in Guatemala, and it’s organically grown. That matters to us, not just because the coffee tastes great, but because supporting female producers is at the heart of what we do. These women are doing incredible work, and we’re proud to share their coffee with you.

About the Producer: Women's CODECH in Huehuetenango
The Women Producer coffee from CODECH (Coordinator of Organizations for the Development of Concepcion Huista) is a special program and coffees in this lot are 100% from female-owned or female-managed farms. The female growers are paid a premium to have their lots separated out for this specific offering and the premiums are used in part by the women of CODECH to support health initiatives in the community. Half of the premium is collected for a women's health workshop in the municipality of Concepcion Huista, which has a high infant-mortality rate.
Unfortunately there have historically been legal obstacles to women owning their own farms and/or becoming card-holding cooperative members in Guatemala. As a result, some of the producing associations with which my green coffee importer works have begun separating out female growers' coffee to sell separately as part of their Women Coffee Producers program. This ensures a gender-equity premium paid directly to the women.
Sourcing in Guatemala
We came across this lot from one of our import partners, Cafe Imports, a B-Corporation doing amazing things in the coffee world. CODECH is a second-tier organization located in the municipality of Concepcion Huista in the department of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. It comprises 10 different member organizations and has 476 members. CODECH was founded in 1998, as representatives of the member organizations were in search of alternative development programs for the community in Concepcion Huista. One of CODECH’s main objectives is the participation of women in society and the workforce.
Gregorio, the general manager of CODECH, is also pushing for farmers to renovate their farms. He believes they could be producing about three times their current volume on average.
Their organic certification reflects a commitment to both environmental sustainability and independence from corporate fertilizer and oil markets.
Huehuetenango is located in Western Guatemala bordering Mexico. It is extremely diverse and known for producing some of the best coffees in Latin America due to its climate, altitude, water sources, and traditional varieties.

I enjoyed this coffee. I got dark chocolate and smoky notes when I brewed it in a Chemex brewer. Excellent after dinner coffee.
This is a great coffee that feels very familiar but, as the name implies, has a bit of something fun. The initial taste I got was more roasty and sweet, but then you get a bit of brightness and acidity which I love in a cup. The brightness comes through more as the coffee cools. As with other Guatemalan coffees I’ve had, acidity is pretty low overall but it’s present here enough to add some levity. This would be a nicely balanced option for someone getting into single origin coffees.
This was my favorite coffee from the kit. Really sweet and comfortable. Definitely gonna get more of it!
This is a fantastic blend. I usually drink my coffee with milk but this was extremely smooth with an almost creamy texture when I drank it black.
