Whimsical - Female Producer Co-Op - Guatemala Washed Organic
Central American coffees are some of my absolute favourites. They are also the coffees I dabbled in when I first began my specialty coffee journey. Packed full of sweetness with fruits and nuts, my friends and family are always caught off guard at the first sip. A ruffled brow, followed by an "interesting" is the reaction I have come to expect. That's why I have named this series of coffee Whimsical. It's playful and surprising in the best of ways.
I am overly excited about this particular lot because it comes from a female-producer co-op in a small town in Guatemala and it's organic. Read more about the program and its community efforts below.
About: The Women Producer coffee from CODECH (Coordinator of Organizations for the Development of Concepcion Huista) is a special program and coffees in this lot are 100% from female-owned or female-managed farms. The female growers are paid a premium to have their lots separated out for this specific offering and the premiums are used in part by the women of CODECH to support health initiatives in the community. Half of the premium is collected for a women's health workshop in the municipality of Concepcion Huista, which has a high infant-mortality rate.
Unfortunately there have historically been legal obstacles to women owning their own farms and/or becoming card-holding cooperative members in Guatemala. As a result, some of the producing associations with which my green coffee importer works have begun separating out female growers' coffee to sell separately as part of their Women Coffee Producers program. This ensures a gender-equity premium paid directly to the women.
Program: CODECH is a second-tier organization located in the municipality of Concepcion Huista in the department of Huehuetenango in Guatemala. It comprises 10 different member organizations and has 476 members. CODECH was founded in 1998, as representatives of the member organizations were in search of alternative development programs for the community in Concepcion Huista. One of CODECH’s main objectives is the participation of women in society and the workforce.
The organization's organic certification is not only indicative of its commitment to being environmentally friendly, but also to be independent from transnationals which produce fertilizers. They also want independence from the price of oil (used in fertilizers).

This is a fantastic blend. I usually drink my coffee with milk but this was extremely smooth with an almost creamy texture when I drank it black.
